Our identity and personal journey is intimately connected to place and cultural history. The agrarian community in Laurinburg, North Carolina has suffered from the same structural racism that contributes to a disproportionate number of African American farmers, now around 1% nation-wide. Growing Change was founded to empower youth to overcome these disparities. It develops community by harnessing the leadership skills of veterans, as they teach farming to youth diverted from the penal system. Brownfields are reclaimed and healthy food systems are set up for communities. Clinical support therapy to mentors and students alike is offered as each group binds together to face these deep challenges. Come listen to the stories of the leaders and youth of Growing Change as they discuss how we can understand our own values and stories to create actions plans for long-term cultural change in the food system.
