Associate Professor, retired and now teaching part time for the Biology Department at the University of  North Carolina at Pembroke.  She was instrumental in establishing the Sustainable Agriculture track of the Environmental Science degree and a minor in sustainable agriculture.

Dr. Hanmer is also the Chair of the Board of Directors for the non-profit organization GrowingChange.  The mission of Growingchange is transform closed prison sites into sustainable farms and education centers that reclaim opportunities, attain education and sustain personal and environmental wellness for troubled youth, returning veterans, and our community.

Dr. Hanmer received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in nursing and worked for many years as a nurse practitioner.   During that time she discovered a real passion for the plant world and eventually went back to school at the Ohio State University earning a Ph.D. in plant pathology. 

Dr Hanmer is currently teaching a variety of courses including botany, mycology, plant physiology, principles of sustainable agriculture and pest management.  Her areas of interest include sustainable food systems, nutrition and the effects of agriculture on climate change.
